Wilda Aline Bruce died June 8, 2018, at Montrose Memorial Hospital, due to complications from a damaged heart following surgery. She was 84.
She was born July 18, 1933, to Walter and Gertrude Harding in Bowie. When she was an infant, the family moved from Bowie to Fort Lupton to farm. After years of losing crops to frequent hail stroms, the family returned to the Western Slope. Mrs. Bruce finished high school in Paonia in 1951 and pursued a career in nursing. Because she was unable to achieve that goal, she encouraged her children and grandchildren to continue education beyond high school.
After a short period of time living in Salt Lake City, Utah, with her sister Betty, Mrs. Bruce returned to Paonia. She married Morris Bruce in 1954. They lived most of their lives in Paonia.
After the death of her husband in 1997, Mrs. Bruce moved to Montrose.
She enjoyed sewing, quilting, gardening and hosting family celebrations.
She is survived by three of her four children, Criselle Tuckel of Sedalia, Morris Clayton Bruce of Montrose and Sandra Scott of Dubai; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 20, at Cedar Hill Cemetery. A picnic will follow at Paonia Town Park.
Crippin Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
