The Women's Surface Creek Saddle Club is again hosting the Grand Mesa Trail Horse Trials on Mesa Top, and inviting riders to join in. "Come join us for the most fun a family, or group of friends, can have together on their horses!" writes club member Carol Nudell.
The event, held every two years, is set for Sept. 16. It consists of a beautiful nine-mile ride atop the Grand Mesa in spectacular fall colors. There are judged obstacles along the route -- things riders would normally encounter along a trail -- that participants can challenge their horse with or skip.
The footing is good but slightly rocky and the views are spectacular.
Advance entry fee is $25 for adults, $50 for a family (up to four riders), and $15 for youth. The fee increases on the day of the event, going to $35 for adults, $60 for family, and $20 for youth at the gate.
There are great prizes in four age groups.
This is always one of the club's favorite events, and all are invited to join in the fun. Please contact Lori Molitor at 856-4680 or email firstname.lastname@example.org for an entry form.
Two fatal accidents occurred in Delta County within a two-day span last week.
Casey Gillenwater, 25, of Delta was killed the afternoon of Wednesday, Sept. 13, in a single-vehicle rollover on Highway 133 outside of Hotchkiss.
