I hope the public will wake up to see that the misguided Republican party agenda is to cut taxes for the wealthy and eliminate much-needed services for the public and the planet. Choosing this agenda equates to the public shooting themselves in the foot. Climate change is real and we can't afford to ignore it for the next four years of this new administration.
Our democracy was severely compromised when Citizens United was passed by the Supreme Court just as President Obama took office. Citizens United allows undisclosed sources to donate money in the way of Superpacs to fund election campaigns. We have seen out-of-state interference with our election campaigns. People like the Koch brothers can finance a candidate of their liking in order to buy political influence. This serves none of the public to allow this interference in our democratic process and must not be allowed to continue. We need to send the government a single, clear message: Repeal Citizens United! Only the Supreme Court justices can repeal this.
I worked for 20 years with immigrants from all over but predominantly from Mexico who were working hard in places like our orchard and squeezing in ESL classes I taught. English is a very difficult language to learn and just like your babies learning, it takes years. These people are wonderful and made me a better person. Immigration reform is necessary but there's no need to do it in a Gestapo-style roundup or to terrify these wonderful assets to our culture anymore than they have already been. There are much more pressing problems to spend our money on now. Our immigrants need to be respected and appreciated.
In the meantime, the Great Divide continues and all media, especially FOX News, must be held accountable to truth and facts. Speak out by way of phone calls, emails or organized actions about the issues that concern you to your elected officials and hold them accountable for their actions. No longer can we sit back in complacency.
Above all, we must treat each other with respect, politeness, kindness and love. That is the only way to cross this divide. After all, we all do the best we can based on our experiences. We are only as good as our teachers.
