Delta High School will have a new golf coach for the 2015 season. Devil's Thumb head pro Ken Brown has replaced Marty Rover as the Panthers' golf coach. Rover chose to step down to spend more time with his growing family.
Brown, a 1983 graduate of Delta High School, has been working in the golf scene since 2001, having worked in both Cedaredge and Delta. His coaching duties have included both boys and girls with Montrose High School for four years.
Delta's new coach has been around golf since he was 6 years old.
When asked about the coming season, Brown noted, "I'm looking forward to the new year. We have some good kids, with three individuals who have state experience. Logan Wood and Mason Garcia were at state last season and Blake Reiher, as a freshman, attended state two years ago. All three are juniors at Delta High School this year.
Christian Hall brings the number of juniors listed on the roster to four.
Sophomores who have indicated a desire to play golf for the Panthers include KC Carlson and Jaspar Carmichael.
Four freshmen will make their bid for playing time on the varsity. Those four include Rowyn Carmichael, Kyle Mock, Isaac Gibson and Clayton Abila.
Practice sessions for the new season began on Monday, Aug. 10. Delta and Cedaredge are slated to play in their first tournament of the year on Aug. 13 in Cedaredge. Players are scheduled to begin play at 1 p.m. The Panthers are scheduled to play Redlands Mesa on Aug. 18 (Tuesday) with an 8 a.m. starting time.
Three candidates are hoping to bring an end to the Republican-dominated Delta County Board of County Commissioners. Two are Democrats who call themselves men of ideas; the third is an independent candidate who says he's frustrated by the "status quo."
