In the midst of a complex yet inevitable decision to remove the upper portion of the aged 215-year-old Ute Council Tree, I applaud the actions taken by the good people of our Delta County Historical Society.
The course of action was well thought out and costly, but nonetheless came summarily as the protection of life and property was the Delta County Historical Society's number one priority.
Much appreciation also goes to the City of Delta for the many years of maintaining the Council Tree Arbor at Confluence Park. The six saplings from the Ute Council Tree that now surround the arbor are in good hands.
Two fatal accidents occurred in Delta County within a two-day span last week.
Casey Gillenwater, 25, of Delta was killed the afternoon of Wednesday, Sept. 13, in a single-vehicle rollover on Highway 133 outside of Hotchkiss.
