Cedaredge area postal carrier Patsy Arnold has earned a personal commendation from the postmaster general.
Last summer while doing her mail route, she responded to a potentially dangerous situation that involved a young child and helped secure a safe outcome to events.
Patsy was on her rural mail route just as she has been doing for postal customers for 20 years. There was a vehicle in front of her.
"He was driving right in front of me," she explained. "He pulled over and waved at me to stop."
Patsy did and when she went to see what the matter was she found the vehicle's driver suffering obvious distress. "He was shaking all over," she said. Patsy noticed an 18-month-old toddler in the back seat. The man was on his cell phone and calling for first responder help. The man had gotten into his vehicle and was already headed to the store for a medication when symptoms became very severe.
He turned out to be the son of a Cedaredge Post Office co-worker, Kisa Tourney, and the child was his son.
Patsy stayed with the situation until first responders arrived. The man had suffered a bee sting and was having a severe allergic reaction to it.
Patsy said that the responders took the man to Cedaredge Food Town where he was given an over-the-counter antihistamine.
She explained that the man had never known before that he was allergic to bee stings. Before leaving home for the store with his son, he had called his wife, a nurse, for advice on what to do.
Patsy's supervisor at the time judged her experience and response to be exceptional. Her supervisor sent the story up the U.S. Postal Service chain of command where it eventually landed on the Postmaster General's desk. A letter of commendation to Patsy followed.
Patsy's story also appeared in the "heroes" corner of the postal carrier's trade publication.
In the commendation letter to Patsy, Postmaster General Megan J. Brennan states in part, "I want to commend your selfless display of civic duty. We are fortunate to have employees of your caliber represent this organization. I am proud of the way you handled this situation, and I am always grateful when employees look out for each other."
