A motorcyclist from Broomfield sustained serious injuries in a collision that closed down Highway 133 near Bethlehem Road Friday, June 22, at approximately 4:35 p.m.

According to Trooper Josh Lewis with the Colorado State Patrol, a 2002 Toyota Tundra driven by Don Gates, 57, was westbound on Highway 133 when Timothy Staroba, 47, lost control of a 2018 Harley-Davidson motorcycle as he was riding eastbound. Staroba laid the bike down and became separated from the bike, which hit the front of the Toyota.

Gates was not injured. Neither alcohol nor drugs are considered a factor in the crash, although it's believed that Staroba may have been hit by a bird just before the accident occurred, said Trooper Lewis.

Traffic was rerouted over Bethlehem Road. In addition to the Colorado State Patrol, sheriff's deputies, North Fork Ambulance and the Paonia Fire Department responded to the crash.

While this is a unique situation, Trooper Lewis reminds everyone to share the road and be cognizant of other vehicles. With the warm weather comes an increase in two-wheeled vehicle traffic, and drivers are encourage to "double and triple check before making lane changes or crossing intersections."
