Markee Travis retires from Delta County Libraries

The job of technology coordinator for Delta County Libraries includes a huge variety of tasks, from answering patron questions about iPads to swapping out printers and computers to selecting the new hold music for the district phone system. District director Lea Hart explains, "This job requires technical knowledge, customer service, creativity and a good deal of flexibility."

In conjunction with Comfort for Critters, participants in the summer reading program at the Montrose Regional Library knit and sewed blankets and toys for the dogs and cats at the Delta animal shelter.

HiSet test is a high point for literacy program

A devastating funding cut created huge challenges for the Delta County Libraries' literacy program in the last few months. As district staff struggles to find alternate funding sources to help preserve high school equivalency education, English as a Second Language programs, and valuable teaching jobs, literacy administrator Gail Srebnik is hanging on to any positive news.

As summer reaches its apex and Delta County residents travel to other places, library card holders may be pleasantly surprised to find out that a library card from Delta County Libraries will provide them access to other libraries, reading materials, and online tools. Many people are aware they can request books from other libraries through interlibrary loan, but fewer know that a local library card entitles them to obtain additional library cards at other libraries or library districts within the state of Colorado.

Libraries scramble to fund literacy programs

A grant that has provided funding for literacy programs in Delta County for nearly 20 years has dried up. The lack of funding has Delta County Libraries scrambling for ways to compensate the eight qualified individuals who teach English language acquisition and high school equivalency classes in Delta and Hotchkiss.

"This is a serious blow to us and Delta County as it will certainly harshly limit the services we can offer through our adult literacy program," said Tracy Ihnot, communications and outreach administrator for Delta County Libraries.

Statewide book giveaway supports early literacy

One Book 4 Colorado (OB4CO) is back for its sixth consecutive year and is giving away 75,000 copies of the same book to every four year old in the state. OB4CO is a privately funded program that is a collaboration between Lt. Governor Donna Lynne's office, Colorado Office of Early Literacy, Colorado State Library, the Denver Preschool Program, public and military libraries statewide, the private sector and the nonprofit and foundation communities.

The Hotchkiss Library will soon get a facelift, prompting a three-week closure of the branch. Before the library closes, patrons are able to check out entire boxes of materials at once, and keep the items throughout the renovation period.

VFW, library team up to help troops

Lee Marts VFW Post 3571, its auxiliary and the Delta Library are teaming up again to help supply deployed active duty military men and women with "goodie boxes" from home.

This joint project, dubbed Operation Troop Bounty, provides a local way for community members to provide active duty military personnel with such useful and appreciated things as travel size toiletries, snacks (such as jerky, gum, individual size packs of snack crackers and cookies, and unfortunately exempting chocolate, which melts in so many environments), books, hard candy, individual packets of "baby wipes," packaged individual drinks (coffee, tea, cocoa, etc.), puzzles, combs and more.

State grant helps power library resources

Libraries take in plenty of overdue fines throughout the course of a year, but, contrary to popular belief, the total amount accumulated in that way accounts for a small percentage of a library district's total budget. Library funding is always an interesting challenge, as libraries rely on numerous revenue sources and budgets that fluctuate according to local economies, available grants, donations and more.

Last fall, the Paonia Library received two backpacks from the Colorado State Library. These packs contained such contents as binoculars, wildlife guides, Colorado State Parks information, and, most beneficial to local residents, passes to Colorado State Parks. These passes were offered by Colorado Parks and Wildlife as a way to promote the incredible outdoor opportunities available throughout Colorado. Paonia Library was one of only eight libraries selected around the state to experiment with the pilot program, officially called CheckOutColorado.

Starting the summer with hoops of fun

Delta County Libraries launched signups for summer reading as soon as school ended and the response has been enthusiastic throughout the county. Almost 350 children, teens and adults have already signed up to track their reading, earn prizes, and attend exciting events over the next two months, and library staff expects much more participation to follow, both in the libraries and online.

Geology expert 'rocks' Delta County Libraries

Given that geologist Dr. Dave Noe has spent the last 10 years outdoors, thoroughly exploring ranches, state parks, and BLM and Forest Service land, it might seem inappropriate to confine him to a library meeting room to give a presentation about his field. However, Noe works as well indoors as he does out, keeping his audiences rapt during lengthy discussions of the local geological maps that are the result of his work.

Poker tournament garners $4,000 for library project

The Delta Kiwanis Club's fifth annual Texas Hold'em Charity Poker Tournament held April 2, 2016, at Bill Heddles Recreation Center garnered approximately $4,500 for service projects that focus on Delta children, with Josh Applegate named as the tournament winner.

The fundraiser is a partnership between the Delta Kiwanis Club and Western Slope Poker Tour LLC, with proceeds from this year's event earmarked to fund the club's Delta Library service project.

With schools starting this week, displays in local stores have been flooded with piles of pencils, paper, backpacks, rulers and all those essentials that make going back to school an overwhelming shopping event for parents and an exciting chance to get new stuff for kids. The National Retail Federation estimates that the average American family will spend over $600 on back-to-school-related supplies, electronics and clothing in 2015.
