For the second consecutive year, Paonia pitcher Kaden Seriani was named Class 2A baseball player of the year by the Colorado High School Activities Association. Seriani, who made the CHSAA first team three consecutive years, batted .600 for the season and was second in home runs regardless of class with 13. At the plate Seriani had an ERA of 0.84.

The 2018 Western Slope All-League baseball honors were released recently. Delta, the 3A WSL champion, landed six athletes on the 23-member first-team roster with one other player earning honorable mention honors. This year's turnout for the annual Rockies' Skills Challenge, hosted at Bill Heddles Recreation Center, was the biggest its been in some time. Assistant Bill Heddles Recreation Director Tyler Schumacker announced this year's participants included 75 youngsters ranging in age from six to 13 years old.

For the Delta Panthers baseball team, the 3A state tournament was a hurry up and wait affair and ultimately a disappointing end to a very successful season, including the Western Slope League title.

Over the span of a few days, Delta prepared and then changed travel plans three times as rains pushed the entire playoff schedule back a week.

Delta's Panthers had an uneasy beginning to its baseball season losing five of the first eight games played, including losses to 2A powerhouse Paonia, 4A Erie, 5A Montrose, and a double header event against 4A Roosevelt. Since those first eight games the Panthers have lost once (to Paonia) in the last 13 games.

Last Tuesday's baseball game between Cedaredge's Bruins and host Olathe provided some anxiety and late-inning heroics before Cedaredge could salvage a 7-3 WSL win. The Bruins had another late-inning surge where they scored four runs in the top of the seventh to secure a 9-1 win at Craig over the Moffat County Bulldogs on April 27 and closed the week with an 18-3 win at home over Grand Valley on April 28.

The City of Delta announced this week that it has been awarded a grant in the amount of $10,232 from the Baseball Tomorrow Fund (BTF). The grant will support replacement of old worn out and unsafe youth baseball and softball equipment and provide funding for all brand new helmets, catchers' gear, batting tees and bats.

Delta High School's baseball team played through a typical spring in Colorado recently with games in blustery winter-like temperatures to more soothing and warmer games over the weekend in Erie and Niwot.

Following the previous week's contest against Roaring Fork where game-time temperatures were in the high 50's and lower 60's, Delta's game in Paonia was played in windy and much cooler temperatures with the Eagles claiming a 7-1 victory (see related story by Tamie Meck).

The 2016 Rockies' Skills Challenge was held on June 15 at Confluence Park. Boys and girls, ranging in age from 8 to 13, competed in running, hitting and throwing for a chance to advance to the next round of competition.

Competition was divided into 6/7, 8/9, 10/11 and 12/13 age divisions.

A shocking 5-3 loss (in eight innings) to Limon's Badgers in a second game on Friday eliminated the Bulldogs from this year's state 2A playoffs.

The Panthers were last in a state playoff in 1984 when Delta head coach Steve Reiher played shortstop for the Panthers. The baseball team from Hotchkiss High School took one huge step toward becoming a family last Friday afternoon.

Cole Carvill hit a walk-off grand slam and the Bulldogs beat No. 1 Paonia 12-8, evening the regular season series between the rivals and giving Hotchkiss a major shot in the arm as the postseason approaches.
