A Little Help of Delta County will sponsor "Service Saturday" to help senior citizens with home and yard tasks. On Saturday morning, June 16, local volunteers will spread out in the Cedaredge/Surface Creek area to help their elderly neighbors with weeding, raking, window washing, indoor dusting and other similar tasks.

A Little Help is a nonprofit assistance program that connects neighbors to help seniors thrive. The program began in the North Fork Valley and is now expanding into other Delta County communities. For months since March of this year, Kathy Edwards, Delta County coordinator for the organization, has been actively recruiting volunteers and seniors in need of assistance.

She spoke to the Rotary Club of Cedaredge in April and has been meeting with Surface Creek area churches. Last Thursday she spoke to seniors at the Senior Comm-Unity Meals luncheon at the Cedaredge Civic Center. And she is spreading the word with flyers as she seeks volunteer helpers and seniors needing service. She is available to speak at churches, service clubs, and other settings.

A successful "Service Saturday" requires two things: volunteers (including adults, children, and groups) and older community members in need of help with home and yard tasks. So Edwards is seeking both helpers and those in need of help. For the Saturday event she welcomes all volunteers and seniors with no cost to those receiving service.

Looking toward the future, Edwards is also seeking long-term volunteers and seniors who want to sign up for continuing membership services. To work and receive services beyond Saturday, long-term volunteers will have to complete an application and go through a screening process and senior members will also have to apply for continuing services and pay a modest fee based on their ability to pay.

Thanks to the Eckert-based Program of All Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) organization, Kathy already has a small group of willing helpers for Saturday but more volunteers are needed as are seniors in need of service. Volunteers will meet around 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 16, at the PACE/Volunteers of America (VOA) facility at 11411 Highway 65 in Eckert and then disperse to provide services to seniors from 9 a.m. to noon that morning.

Both volunteers and seniors in need of services should call 970-527-3482 or email kathy@alittlehelp.org as soon as possible to sign up and make Delta County's first "Service Saturday" a success. For more information visit the organization's website: alittle
