Melinda Katchur, secretary/treasurer of the Surface Creek Saddle Club, has announced the point totals for gymkhana events through June 20. A gymkhana features horse and rider activities which demonstrate equestrian skills including barrel racing, pole bending, flag races, and a variety of fun events. Riders come from throughout Delta County and elsewhere in Colorado to compete for fun, points, and prizes.
Gymkhana riders compete in five age categories ranging from seven-year-old-and-under to adult. Seven and under contestants either ride with an adult leading the horse or ride solo. Competitors accumulate points toward local prizes awarded at the end of the gymkhana season and they also earn points to qualify for other rodeo competitions.
A gymkhana is held every Wednesday evening throughout the summer with the exception of the Fourth of July. Gates open at 5 p.m. with contestant sign-up from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Competition begins at 6:45 p.m. and generally ends around 9 p.m. The arena is located at 24224 Grand Mesa Drive in Cedaredge.
Volunteers are always needed. To volunteer, to join the Saddle Club, or for more information, visit the club's Facebook page or online at www.surfacecreeksaddleclub.org.
