According to Sandy Maddox, secretary of Friends of Cedaredge Public Library, the next meeting of the Friends will be a historic one. For the first time since 2001, members will be discussing the organization's bylaws and voting on several changes. Current members and those wishing to join are encouraged to attend this important meeting to be held Thursday, Jan. 11, at 2 p.m. in the conference room of the Cedaredge Library.

Membership dues and the basic structure of the group will remain the same. Proposed changes will reduce the number of monthly meetings, redefine officer terms of office, clarify the process for reviewing the organization's finances, and establish new committees.

Under the old bylaws, meetings were held every month. The proposed change will reduce the meetings to the second Thursday in January, March, May, September and November. Special programs will be presented at each meeting. The November meeting will continue to serve as the Friends' annual meeting. It is proposed that additional meetings be scheduled as needed.

Under the proposed changes, officers will serve staggered two-year terms to allow for an overlap of new and experienced officers. And the proposed changes include a new financial review provision requiring the appointment of a qualified individual to conduct a financial review each year with a report to be presented at the January meeting.

The old bylaws listed only two standing committees, membership and program, but did not assign chairs for either committee. The proposed changes make the treasurer responsible for the membership committee and the vice president is assigned to chair the program committee. New committees are proposed to manage book sales, newsletter and nominations.

Membership dues remain unchanged with categories including annual and lifetime rates for individuals and families. Businesses may also join the Friends. To encourage family memberships, the proposed bylaw changes allow each family to have two votes in organization elections.

The Friends promote the library, provide funds to meet special library needs and encourage gifts, endowments and memorials. Friends' members also volunteer and assist with library operations.
