Sure and begorrah, a little bit of Ireland came to Delta, as 103 seniors enjoyed a free St. Patrick's holiday meal on Thursday, March 15, at the Delta Senior Center (DSC). The meal was the first this year sponsored by the Delta Elks Lodge #1235, through a grant from the Grand Lodge, part of the Elks National Foundation.
The menu featured corned beef and cabbage, cheese mashed potatoes, mixed veggies, homemade roll, and a brownie, with a drink. The meals were delivered to tables by volunteering Elks members Doug Eades, Bruce and Joan Schmoldt, and Judy Conklin.
An old Irish phrase says, May your home always be too small to hold all your friends. That almost came true as the senior center dining room was full to the brim with those who wanted to enjoy the traditional meal a couple days ahead of the actual holiday.
"We appreciated the large crowd, and it looked like everyone enjoyed it," Doug Eades, an Elks volunteer, said. "We enjoyed being there. We at the Elks are always looking for opportunities to give back to the community. Our motto is 'Elks Care, Elks Share.' "
Although the food was sponsored by the Elks, it was cooked and prepared by the Delta Senior Center cooks, who volunteer to prepare meals on Tuesdays and Thursdays. They were Thom Wheeler, JoAnn Hatch and Arlette Black, plus the DSC volunteers who assisted the cooks with plating the Elks meal.
The board of directors of Delta Senior Citizens, Inc., and the patrons of the Delta Senior Center wish to thank the Delta Elks for their support of local seniors in this special event, which brought the luck of the Irish to Delta.
The Elks also plan to sponsor a free meal for seniors age 60+, in May, for the Memorial Day holiday, with the exact date to be announced later.
