Paonia won eight championship matches and scored 219 points to win the Cowboy Invitational Saturday at Western State Colorado University Field House in Gunnison.
Individual champions include Sackett Chesnik at 138 pounds, Clay Campbell (145), Grey Neal (152), Jesse Burns (160), Anthony Felice (160), Jaden Miller (182), Cyrus Malek-Madani (220) and Levi Peterson (285).
Campbell won his five matches by pin. His total of three minutes on the mat was recognized as the most pins in the least amount of time for the tournament. Campbell's 12-second match win over Kaleb Lovelace of Hotchkiss tied with Robert Cochran of Hotchkiss for the fastest pin of the tournament.
For Burns, Malek-Madani and Peterson, all of whom won their championship match by pin, it marked their first high school tournament win.
Zeb Etter (126) and Anthony Miller (170) placed third; at 106, freshman Reagan Todd placed fourth; Soul Connelly (120) won the fifth-place match on a 57-second pin over Montrose; Ethan White (120) and Austyn Norris (182) placed seventh; and Shane Odom (145) and Carlos Lozano placed eighth.
The tournament follows a 16-man scramble bracket, a pool play to bracket format that places up to 16 wrestlers.
Paonia was ranked No. 2 in Class 2A On the Mat team rankings heading into last week's competition. It hosts No. 1 Cedaredge this Thursday. Depending on the final pairings, matches between two ranked wrestlers could occur in up to eight weight divisions.
Jan. 19-20 is the annual Paonia Duals and Screamin' Eagle tournament.
Twenty-two teams, including numerous top-15 ranked teams in the state, are entered in the tournament.
Delta Volunteer Fire Department (DVFD) will be holding its annual fireworks show at Confluence Park on Wednesday, July 4, having received approval from Delta City Council at the council's June 5 meeting.
The DVFD has 28 volunteers and expects to have eight to 10 firefighters from Cedaredge join them this year.
