In a dual of the Dogs, the Class 2A Hotchkiss Bulldogs won five matches in their 40-22 loss against the 4A Palisade Bulldogs.
Held Jan. 4 at Colorado Mesa University, the dual opened at 138 pounds with an 8-1 win for Hotchkiss's Kylar Massano over Lodan Head. Palisade wrestlers won the next three matches by pin: Cody Head over JP Scriver at 145, Austin Bernal over Jace Peebles at 152, and Cody Cordova over Ethan Guy at 160.
Hotchkiss forfeited at 170, and a double forfeit occurred at 182. In the 195-pound match, Palisade's highest ranked wrestler, No. 2 Terrance Williams, won by major decision over No. 2-ranked Devin Curtis.
At 220, Hotchkiss senior Kevin Chavez won by a 9-0 major decision against Gabe Correa.
In his first match of the season, Hotchkiss senior heavyweight Nolan Egging lost by pin to Ricardo Valenzuela.
After a double forfeit at 106, Hotchkiss freshman Robert Cochran won by forfeit at 113. At 120, top ranked junior Sergio Campos won by a 2-1 decision against top-10 ranked Jaggar Wade.
Hotchkiss freshman Traycer Hall pinned Palisade's Wyatt Wilbourn in the second round to win the 132-pound match. Hall had the team's only pin of the night.
HHS 2nd in Gunnison
Following the loss, and a dual loss Friday at Cedaredge, the Bulldogs scored 205 points to place second at the Cowboy Invitational wrestling tournament Saturday at Western State Colorado University Field House in Gunnison.
The Bulldogs sent seven wrestlers into the championship match. Landen Mayberry had three pins and one technical fall to win the 106-pound title. Sergio Campos won at 120.
Placing second were freshmen Robert Cochran (113) and Traycer Hall (132), Jace Peebles (152), Devin Curtis (195) and Kevin Chavez (220).
Taking home bronze were Kylar Massano (138), JP Scriver (145), and Ethan Guy (160).
Campos, Scriver, Peebles and Hall all won four matches by pin.
In his first tournament of the season, senior Nolan Egging (285) placed fourth.
Placing fifth were JD Miller (126), Kaleb Lovelace (145), and Christian Matus (285). Adam Smith (126) finished sixth. The tournament is a 16-man scramble bracket, a pool play to bracket format that places up to 16 wrestlers. Karsen Sommers (132) placed eighth, and Boston Sommer scored six team points and placed ninth.
Hotchkiss duals at Olathe at 6 p.m. Thursday.
On Tuesday, Sept. 11, the Delta County Board of Commissioners called a special meeting to consider the board's response to the Bureau of Land Management's preliminary Environmental Assessment (EA) concerning the lease parcels proposed for the December BLM sale.
Several people from the North Fork were present to provide input.
