Beth Nelson's Delta High School volleyball team was successful in its opening weekend of competition at Gunnison's Invitational last Saturday, Sept. 2.
The Panthers played four times on Saturday with an opening round win over Alamosa, 18-25, 25-21 and 15-13. Delta used two sets, 25-21 and 25-9, to dispose of Salida. The lone loss for Delta in the day-long tournament was to host Gunnison, 19-25, 25-15 and 11-15.
In the final match of the day, Delta was a two-set winner (25-18 and 25-6) over Crested Butte.
Delta 2, Alamosa 1
Lauren Davey (Jr.) and Lexi Quinn (Sr.) shared Delta's lead for kills against the Mean Moose with seven each.
Junior Sara Geddes and senior Elena Gilliam had two blocks apiece for the Panthers with Abby Carlson posting 20 assists and Harlee Roberts good for 11 digs in the three-set match.
Delta 2, Salida 0
Davey continued her strong play at the net with a team-high six kills against the Spartans of Salida.
Quinn also played well in the match with four kills, two blocks and four digs. Abby Carlson served up 14 aces with Gilliam blocking two shots and Roberts collecting another seven digs for the Panthers.
Gunnison 2, Delta 0
Kat Rodriguez, Davey and Quinn were Delta's ace leaders against the Cowboys with two each.
Davey continued her dominant presence at the net with seven kills and a pair of blocks against Gunnision. Quinn finished with two blocks and Gilliam had five kills.
Delta 2, Titans 0
Delta's final match of the tournament came against Crested Butte which produced the Panthers' third win of the young season, 25-18 and 25-6.
Not much new in who produced top performances in the final match. Quinn had five aces and a block, Davey hammered seven kills and a block, Carlson had 13 assists, Roberts finished with seven digs, Geddes had four kills and Alli Atchley served three aces in the win for Delta.
Delta is scheduled to host Montrose Sept. 7 for matches beginning at 4, 5 and 6 p.m. and finish the week with tournament play at Mesa Ridge on Sept. 9.
Two fatal accidents occurred in Delta County within a two-day span last week.
Casey Gillenwater, 25, of Delta was killed the afternoon of Wednesday, Sept. 13, in a single-vehicle rollover on Highway 133 outside of Hotchkiss.
