Delta City Council considered requests from two youth groups at its June 5 meeting.
Elyse Casselberry, Delta County community and economic development director, requested the appointment of six Delta High School students to the youth council for the upcoming school year. She said the goal is to hit the ground running when school begins in August.
Appointed were senior Reagan Clay, four juniors, Trevor Whiteside, Caleb Frazier, Claire Corbasson and Lauren Davey, and sophomore Noeli Castro.
In the coming year, youth council members plan to work to balance representation on the council through participation from students in each grade; develop a program around suicide prevention; learn about county/municipal government and community engagement; and developing a countywide "Youth Master Plan" in partnership with other high schools.
At the council's request, Darnell Place-Wise of the Delta Barracudas Swim Team Board, updated the council on funding for the purchase of a timing system, which would qualify Delta to host the state summer swim meet in 2019.
She was accompanied by several members of the Barracudas.
The goal is to have the timing system in place by July 17, the last chance swim meet, which typically is attended by individuals from all over western Colorado who still need to qualify for the state meet.
The total cost of the timing system is $10,000. Sponsorships to date include McCracken Family, $500; Jolley Smiles, $1,000; Barracudas fundraisers and sponsorships. $1,600; Delta County School District, $2,500; and First Colorado National Bank, $3,000.
Place-Wise said, "Our original ask from the City of Delta was $5,000, and we are now requesting $2,000."
The council voted unanimously to contribute the requested $2,000.
