Cedaredge Library manager and longtime Cedaredge librarian Cara Morton retired in May 2017. Delta County Libraries began a months-long search for her replacement and in July welcomed Alexis Nelson to the manager's position.

Nelson, a fifth generation Coloradan, is excited about her new role with the libraries. "My highest passion in life is to serve and I believe that if you love what you do, you'll never work a day in your life," Nelson says.

Twenty years ago, Nelson spent time backpacking and climbing in the southern San Juan Mountains. Inspired by her experience, she pursued a degree in environmental studies from the University of Colorado in 2007.

Over the past decade, Nelson has worked as an outdoor educator and outreach coordinator for the City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks and as a natural history guide and facilitator for Experiential Learning Associates.

"We believe that the experience Alexis has in team leadership, visitor services, outdoor education and hospitality, as well as her previous role in the public sector, make her a great fit for the Cedaredge Library," says LaDonna Gunn, assistant district director of Delta County Libraries.

Nelson and her husband recently relocated to the Cedaredge area to be closer to family. She very quickly became involved in her new community by volunteering at the Cedaredge Library and The Nature Connection in Hotchkiss.

"I am excited and grateful to be a part of the Cedaredge community," Nelson comments. "I look forward to working with the team at Cedaredge Library and getting to know the patrons."

Since her hire date of July 17, Nelson's training has been extensive and countywide. "We are providing Alexis with training at each of the five libraries," explains Gunn. "The four other library managers as well as various library and administrative staff offer a wide scope of experience and many years of expertise in our field. Alexis is an enthusiastic learner and we are very happy to have her on board."

Nelson recently spent time training at both Hotchkiss and Delta libraries. "I have learned so much already working with staff throughout the district," Nelson says. As she moves toward settling into her role as Cedaredge Library manager, Nelson has set high aspirations.

"I am eager and committed to help bridge and strengthen community partnerships, and to empower people to explore, learn, create, and connect with others through our libraries."
