The Black Mesa CattleWomen worked with the Hotchkiss K-8 life skills classroom instructors by providing information about beef facts including nutrition, recipes, and ranching practices. They then sponsored a beef cookoff.
For the competition students were to choose a recipe using one pound of locally raised hamburger. The groups were asked to create a menu using a beef recipe, then design a place setting and poster for the beef cookoff. After taking the written exam about beef facts, the groups prepared the entree and CattleWomen provided judges to score their entree, place setting and proper cooking practices. Those scores were averaged with the written exam. The December group was very close in points. The first place score was 267 points, second place 266, and third place 262. CattleWomen provided prizes.
The winners were: Lilly Jardon, Annika Knehs, David Dennison, and Dakota Sheldon, first; Esthefany Espinoza, Nehemiah Barona, and Ian Aguilera, second; Hosanna Marquez, Marcus Broadbent and Juan Ramirez, third.
