Barracudas make appeal for $5,000

The Delta City Council is weighing a request from the Delta Barracuda swim team for a donation of $5,000 to help with the purchase of new timing equipment and a scoreboard.

Darnell Place-Wise made the request on behalf of the swim team.

Fire restrictions

Stage 1 fire restrictions are now in effect on the Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forests. Due to higher fuel moisture measurements and a low/moderate fire danger level the Grand Mesa National Forest will NOT implement fire restrictions at this time.

Hyundai, trash truck collide

A collision between a 2001 Hyundai sedan and an International trash truck resulted in the death of Kristina Hutchins, 73, of Paonia, the driver of the Hyundai. The crash occurred Wednesday, May 23, at approximately 2:30 p.m. on Highway 92 near mile marker 9.

Irrigation canal shareholders object to trail proposal

The shareholders of the North Delta Irrigation Company (NDIC) sent a clear message to Delta City Council earlier this month -- they have no desire to be part of the city's trails network.

A city parks, recreation, open space and trails master plan identified a seven-mile segment along the North Delta canal that would connect Cottonwood Park with the Escalante Wildlife Area.

In December 2017, Anita Evans of The Nature Connection (TNC) announced that TNC would be the recipient of a $1.7 million Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) Inspire Grant. The project includes cash and in-kind matching contributions, totaling over $1.2 million, from dozens of community organizations, including Delta County Libraries.

Senior CommUnity meals are served at four dining sites in Delta County -- Cedaredge Community Center (Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday), Delta Senior Center (Monday-Wednesday-Friday), Hotchkiss Senior Center (Monday-Wednesday-Friday) and Paonia Senior Citizen Center (Monday-Wednesday-Friday). Meals on Wheels are also delivered from each location.

Delta's great season ends with two playoff losses

For the Delta Panthers baseball team, the 3A state tournament was a hurry up and wait affair and ultimately a disappointing end to a very successful season, including the Western Slope League title.

Over the span of a few days, Delta prepared and then changed travel plans three times as rains pushed the entire playoff schedule back a week.

Ty Grant knew early on that he had natural speed. A 27-time individual placer during his four years of track competition at Cedaredge High School, he discovered it after winning a lot of sprint races in junior high school and at the Hershey's Track and Field Games, considered the Olympics of junior high track.

Hearings to be held to explain proposed ambulance district

Over the next week or so, local property owners will receive a notice of public hearings to be held in regard to the service plan for a proposed North Fork Ambulance Health Service District. This is part of a proactive plan to ensure funding for ambulance service in the North Fork valley, according to a press release from the North Fork Ambulance (NFA).

New trash fees take effect in June in Paonia

Town of Paonia garbage customers will see an increase in their monthly bill beginning in June.

The increase comes after trustees formally adopted a resolution establishing garbage rates and charges at the May 21 meeting.

The Town of Paonia will advertise for a full-time position after trustees unanimously approved the hiring of a full-time office staff member at the May 22 board meeting. With that hiring, administration will not close Town Hall on Fridays as had been discussed at previous meetings.
